Saint Martin de Porres was born in\u00a0Lima, Peru, in 1579<\/strong>. His father was a Spanish nobleman, and his mother was of African and Indigenous descent. Martin entered the\u00a0Dominican convent of the Rosary in Lima<\/strong>\u00a0as a lay helper. He humbly accepted simple tasks such as sweeping floors, cooking, and caring for the sick. Saint Martin de Porres died in\u00a01639<\/strong>\u00a0in Lima, surrounded by his fellow Dominicans and many who loved him. His reputation for holiness spread quickly, and pilgrims visited his tomb, where miracles were reported. Pope Gregory XVI beatified him in 1837, and\u00a0Pope John XXIII canonized him in 1962<\/strong>, recognizing his sanctity and heroic virtue.<\/p>

He is honored as the\u00a0patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and barbers<\/strong>, as well as of Peru and people of mixed race.
